Hemp became legal in the United States in 2018 since the Farm Bill was signed into law. However, this massive step forward has left a lot of pet parents confused as to the legitimacy and effectiveness of CBD.
Administering cannabis and CBD for pets is stuck in a grey area. It’s legal yet unapproved for your four-legged friend.
Vets Can’t Recommend or Prescribe CBD for Pets.
As of October 2021, 36 states have legalized and decriminalized marijuana for medicinal and recreational use. And yet, the laws do not address the account for the benefit of cannabis in veterinary medicine.
New Jersey vets cannot prescribe, dispense, or administer any cannabis or cannabis-based products, including CBD, with the current laws.
Also, we could not find CBD products mentioned on the New Jersey state veterinary board website. This means there is no clear guidance to vets on what puts their license at risk for hemp and cannabis.
So, now what?
Vets are put into a difficult position concerning guidance from the state board, which means some will not mention cannabis to clients.
There are many complex considerations around giving hemp to a pet. These include: how the product works, appropriate quantities, potential drug interactions, side effects, and more.
Though the state board is still learning about the many benefits of CBD, businesses like ours spend every waking minute providing all the knowledge available to our clients.
Do Some Vets Recommend It?
The truth is that CBD products may not be to the best benefit of every pet. It is crucial to understand the way cannabis and hemp interact with any other prescription medications that your pet is currently taking.
Also, not all CBD products are labeled accurately. They claim to have specific levels of CBD to THC; however, if you do not find reputable lab-tested products, you may be risking your pet’s life.
One thing that all veterinarians can agree on is that supplemental care should always be discussed as an option.
